Race and Zumba an'Animation Oh My!

I'm writing this after nearly blowing off my entire afternoon doing anything but working on my 3D Maya project. I've come to realize that I much prefer working on a tradition (stop-motion) 3D project than CGI. Working with my hands to build the set and character(s) and shooting with a real camera is an experience that I savor, and cannot be compared to using a computer software. I have to learn Maya well, but I think my future may be in traditional 3D and tradition/CGI 2D animation more so than CGI 3D. There is something really beautiful about organic animation that CGI can never replicate.

On the running front - yesterday I received my bib for the ING Bay to Breakers 12K race on May 16th. I've been wanting to run this race ever since I started running last Fall. The best part of it? I don't even have to train for it. 12K is basically a medium-long run for me, it's not even 8 miles which is what I now run on Fridays. I just need to make sure that I get enough sleep, food and water. This time my goal is to have fun and enjoy the sounds and sights of the event. I'll be running with a camera to capture all the crazy and fantastic displays, maybe get myself into some of them too (if I see that pink gorilla I'm taking a snap with it!).

I started taking Zumba about a month ago. I've always loved to dance. Since my clubbing days ended a long, long time ago, very few of my friends know this about me. In college I was in the Children's Dance Theater where we performed in local schools. It was one of the best experiences I had of my school days. I took belly dancing a couple of years ago but it got to a point where I needed to find a new/better instructor and I just never got around to it. So a couple of months ago as I was dancing around the house I thought wouldn't it be great to take a dance class as part of the core training for running? Since I'm not really into Yoga or aerobics, this is really the one cardio workout that I would likely be able to stick with. I've wanted to try Zumba ever since I first heard of it so I was thrilled to see it offered by the recreational department of our city.

After a month - four classes, I'm really into it. The music is awesome, the dancing is awesome (now I get to shake my bits outside of the safety of my house), the energy is phenomenal. It's a very vigorous and sexy workout. I like it so much that I'm thinking of taking it twice a week. The instructor also teaches at a studio that's close by.

Recently I've started thinking that, while I love running, I also enjoy many other activities. If I were to train for a marathon it's going to take up all of my time outside of the time I spend with family and work. My prediction is that I'll get burned out and probably not enjoy running as much as I want to - which would be a shame. I don't ever want to stop running; doing it in a way that makes it no longer enjoyable will do just that.

So I've been thinking of the alternatives. I will continue to enter Half Marathon races which is a great way to motivate me to keep running. I want to also look into triathlons as I can also bike and swim (though very sloooowly). I like the variety of a triathlon but I need to take some swimming lessons since the only style I know is the 'froggy style'. Hey, what a great idea for the Summer!

I also want to try rock climbing and see what that's like. I get the feeling that it's going to be too slow for my taste - the reason I don't particularly like Yoga. I'm a woman of little patience.

Anyway, this is just ramblings of some of the thoughts been going through my head. Now I need to get back to Maya - possibly the most annoying software ever.
